WORD ON THE STREET

WHAT DOES FREEDOM MEAN TO YOU?

Being able to practice my religion openly and with pride without having to worry about persecution nor acts of hostility.

Moishe L.

Being able to be whatever I want professionally. Growing up, I was always encouraged to be a secretary, saleswoman, or teacher. I don’t think my parents and grandparents who came from Iran, ever imagined that I would grow up to be a doctor while also being able to be a hands-on wife and mother.

After many years in a toxic marriage, freedom to me means being able to get out and finally be granted  my get.  Sadly, I know many women who are still in marital bondage and rely on the limited means of today’s Bais Din to unchain them. For those unfortunate souls, Pesach holds especially personal sentiments.

As Jews, I don’t think we are every truly “free.”  We are bound by many laws and commandments which help us lead a life on the straight and narrow.

Avraham Karman

Shabbos. Being able to unplug from technology and detach from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind is to me the very definition of freedom.  I’m a real estate agent, and in this very competitive industry, weekends are crucial. Most showing and open houses are done on Saturday and Sundays because that is when people are off from work. My colleagues get so burned out because in addition to working Monday through Friday, they are also running around all weekend. Shabbos gives me the luxury to unwind and recharge, and because majority of my clients and buyers are also shomer Shabbos, I don’t have to worry about losing out on a potential listing.

Daniel J.

This is a very philosophical question. I think the definition varies for everyone and can change many times during one’s lifetime.                                                           Yaakov Davidovich

Living in America and being able to say what I want, think what I want, and be a proud Jew! Dov G.
