JCCMP Summer Urgent Blood Drive Held at Khal Zichron Mordechai

A major community project of the Jewish Community Center of Marine Park is the sponsoring of, in conjunction with Maimonides Medical Center, a series of blood drives to raise a supply of safe blood for members of our community. The urgent appeal, in memory of Arnold Jablon, father of Douglas Jablon (special assistant to the president of Maimonides Medical Center) was held last month at Khal Zichron Mordechai (Rabbi Sherer’s shul) at the start of the Three Weeks. Dozens of dedicated Marine Parkers came after work for the evening mitzvah event. In addition to a delicious and nutritious dinner, free gifts were given to all the selfless donors.

Dayan Yonasan Abraham Addresses Major Shuvu Parlor Meeting

A popular highlight of the Southern Brooklyn summer season is the annual Shuvu Summer Parlor Meeting hosted last month in the home of Rabbi Gedalia and Mrs. Rachel Weinberger. Hundreds of men gathered to hear from Rav Dovid Feinstein, Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim and Dayan Yonasan Abraham, a prominent member of the London Beth Din. Shuvu was created more than 25 years ago by Rav Avraham Pam, zt”l, whose heart was torn by the fact that tens of thousands of children from the former Soviet Union had immigrated to Israel and were denied a Torah education by the secular public schools. Today Shuvu is inspiring more than 15,000 students and family members to participate in the beauty of a Torah way of life.

Project Witness Sponsors Holocaust Education Conference for Educators

Perhaps one of the toughest questions in Jewish circles even more than 70 years after the end of the Holocaust is why six million Jews died in such a horrible manner. And this question is especially difficult for young children and students to comprehend. Project Witness, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating documentaries and educational programs, orchestrated last month a Holocaust Education Conference at the Center for Jewish History Museum of Jewish Heritage in Manhattan. The theme of the three-day conference was “Transmitting Memory; Commemorating Heroism: Empowering Today’s Educators for Tomorrow’s Students.” Special sessions were held to discuss methods of teaching the Holocaust in a variety of school setting by educators from across the U.S.; how to deal with challenging questions about the Holocaust; teaching the Holocaust through literature; the role of the museum in portraying the Holocaust; and how to handle new era propaganda.

Shloshim Kinnus and Siyum Hashas Recalls Legacy of Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, Zt”l

Hundreds of men and women marked the Nine Days by attending a moving Shloshim Kinnus and Siyum Hashas that was held at Congregation Gvul Yaabetz in memory of Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, zt”l, general editor of ArtScroll Publications. Many Gedolei HaRabbanim who were close to the niftar paid tribute to his accomplishments and memory. Rabbi Zlotowitz revolutionized life in the English-speaking Jewish world by establishing Mesorah Publications that made it possible for Jews from all segments of Klal Yisrael to understand the Siddur and to learn the Chumash, Tanach, Mishna and the Talmud (both Bavli and Yerushalmi). May his memory continue to be a blessing.

Rabbi Yisroel Reisman and Rabbi Avrohom Schorr Discuss a Jews “Yearning for the Geulah”

The Three Weeks of Mourning for the loss of our Beis Hamikdash have come to an end and we are now in the midst of Chodesh Elul, a month of reflection as we prepare to do teshuvah for the coming Yomim Nora’im. An appropriately timed event was last month’s gathering for dvrei chizuk on inyonim of Tisha B’Av at Yeshiva and Mesivta Torah Vodaath. The event included a special memorial tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Myrtle Hirsch, a’h, beloved supporters of the yeshivah, and was highlighted by special addresses on the theme of “Yearning for the Geulah” by Rabbi Yisroel Reisman, Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta Torah Vodaath and Rabbi Avrohom Schorr, Mara D’asra of Khal Nezer Gedalyahu.
