Dear Readers,

With Pesach approaching, I’d like to revisit the famous story of a rabbi who invited a wealthy member of the community to his home. 

“Rabbi, what is it?” the man asked the rabbi when he called to invite him. “You can tell me over the phone. If it’s money I will be more than happy to give it to you.”

 “I prefer to meet you in person because it’s so urgent,” the rabbi responded. 

When the man arrived, the rabbi said, “I have to speak to you about an individual in our community who is really struggling and does not have enough food for Pesach.” 

“Sure,” the man said, without hesitation. “Who do I make the check out to?”  

“Please write the check out to your brother,” the rabbi answered.

Sometimes we don’t even know that we have a neighbor or friend who is struggling financially. He may have difficulty making ends meet throughout the year, but his stress is compounded when it comes to Pesach and all its associated costs. 

At this time of year, we make a special effort to help people you know – your friends and neighbors – so they can welcome Yom Tov happily and well-prepared. Our local Rabbanim act as a conduit to make sure the people are helped in an honorable, discreet, and dignified manner.
