It wouldn’t be spring without a clean house and a bit of refreshing new décor. This season there is a garden’s array of trends to try out. From tabletop to walls, kitchen to living room, there’s something for every budget and something for everyone to fall in love with.
The color green is one of the biggest trends. The Pantone color forecasters named “Greenery” their color of the year. Think Granny Smith apples! This youthful color brightens spaces and gives a sense of newness, renewal, and optimism. Dress a table in a bright green tablecloth, white china, white tulips and crystal candy dishes filled with crunchy green grapes. Silver or gold accents, like charger plates or napkin rings, are equally dramatic and the right amount of elegance.
Add the trend more subtly with apple green taper candles in silver candlesticks or a full floral arrangement. The soup tureen you never use can become a stunning centerpiece. Take it to the florist so they can make an arrangement with floral foam. A bouquet of a single flower like hydrangeas, carnations or chrysanthemums will make a big statement. Houseplants have returned to the spotlight because of their bright color as well as their oxygen-producing quality. A mini herb garden on the windowsill is simple and nutritious! Find a set of matching, small scale planters in your favorite color, or for a few dollars you can buy the perfect apple green spray paint.
This cheerful green is also grounded enough to be a neutral against many other shades. In a room with a navy velvet sofa, green pillows or an ottoman will pop and look so du jour! Paired with chocolate brown the look is calm and masculine. In a neutral gray and white bedroom, greenery accents add energy and youthfulness.
Dark green and all things tropical made an impact on the runways and that always translates to home interiors. Palm and fern leafs are all the rage, in prints, on fabrics and even wallpapers. Envision a powder room, with walls covered in a bold monstera leaf print, a bamboo framed mirror and a chandelier wrapped in jute with emerald green crystals. Your guests will feel like they escaped to an island! For the bold and daring, nothing could look richer and swankier than a channel-back emerald green sofa, with a brass coffee table and tan leather club chairs. Add a handmade Moroccan rug and floor plants, and you’re off to another destination! Keep it simple and add really fun emerald glasses to your tablescape to have that up-to-the-minute look.
If the thought of bold colors makes you nervous, it is the perfect time to embrace muted colors and pastels. Everyone’s favorite neutrals, gray and white, are incorporating beige, camel and blush pink. Tile and stone countertops don’t have to be monochromatic. Veining with muted colors is the new direction, as is the use of marble in faux applications. Dishware, serveware and wallpapers made to look like marble is the next wave. Mix with neutral accessories in muted colors and it creates a very modern and zen-like interior.
To counter the cool, contemporary gray, white, chrome and marble trends of the past few years, there is a big warming trend happening in interiors. We will start seeing more rustic materials mixed with the modern for a fresh look. Expect to see cork, timber, terra-cotta, and wicker. Home accessories, like accent tables and lighting, will also incorporate warmer metals like bronze and antique brass and burnished metals. Accent pieces that speak to you add personality to the house. Pieces that can be moved around the house are the best way to slowly incorporate new trends into your interior.
Last but not least are geometrics, which are also seen in fashion trends. We’ll see inventive shapes that reflect ancient cultures, whether African or Asian in pattern, but they’ll be modernized. Think simple lines, geometric designs and triangles as a motif. Small goods, like pillows, throws, artwork and serving pieces freshen up your décor. I always tell clients that falling in love with a fabric print is like winning the lottery! Primitive prints have a way of bringing playfulness and creativity to a space. If you like this trend, use it for drapery panels to create a modern, artistic look. Children will appreciate it, too. In a monochromatic print it will mix perfectly with primary colors.
We love the feeling of newness that spring promises. As we reorganize the closets and drawers for the season, try out a new trend at home for a change. Try a pop of invigorating color, embrace the life of a new plant or floral bouquet or be adventurous and mix materials in a new way. Your home should be filled with good things and good energy and give you back everything you put into it!
