The Things We Wish You’d See
A mother’s eyes see different things
Than other people see
They have this strange ability
To morph things into what used to be
For example:
You see a sullen teenager
While I see rosy cheeks
You see a somewhat snarky grin
While I see a newborn’s tiny chin
You see a student who’s forgotten her books
But I see a toddler’s impish looks
You see the adults they soon will be
While to me they’ll always be babies
And though I know my vision’s unique
The sights and scenes of a mother
I sometimes wish you all could peek
Into my lens that’s other
For behind the teenage angst,
Those confounding personalities
Lie toddlerhood and charming smiles
The things we mothers wish you’d see
